The left chart considers global GDP, also known as gross domestic product, which is a measure used to look at a country’s (or countries’) economic health.

It shows that the owners of nearly two thirds (60.1 percent) of the world’s wealth condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. This majority of wealth mostly comes from the U.S. and countries in Europe.

The right hand chart, however, indicates the share of people worldwide that live in a country that condemns or supports Russia.

Here, the largest group is ‘neutral’. According to the EIU, several countries, including Colombia, Turkey and Qatar, who were previously Western-aligned, have moved into the neutral category as their governments are “seeking to reap economic benefits from engaging with both sides.”

The EIU based their research on policies around the world, assessing the enforcement of sanctions, UN voting patterns, domestic political trends, official statements, as well as economic, political, military and historical ties.
