Another attack by the Public Prosecution Service on judges in Poland

The Public Prosecution Service in Poland has once again attacked judges. The Minister of Justice, who also serves as the Prosecutor General, calls for waiving the judges’ immunity. They accuse the judges of being part of an organized criminal group without providing any evidence.

On 29th June, the National Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Poland’s official website posted a statement from the Prosecutor’s spokesperson, Ms. Anna Adamiak. She announced that a request had been submitted to lift the immunity of four common court judges. This wouldn’t be unusual if the judges weren’t named and if the statement didn’t imply they were involved in criminal activities as part of an organized group. This group was fabricated by individuals who the same National Prosecutor’s Office was accused of espionage for a foreign state. This shows the inconsistency of the Prosecutor General, Mr. Adam Bodnar, and an unjust attack on the judiciary. The content of the statement also damages the reputation of the judges mentioned, including Łukasz Piebiak, Jakub Iwańc, and Przemysław Radzik, who are publicly defamed despite the protection guaranteed to every judge by the Polish Constitution. It’s concerning to see how far the 13th December coalition government will go to gain control over the judiciary.
